Indian Dalits find no refuge from caste in Christianity; Untouchablity 'everywhere'

1. Dalit Catholics continue to battle upper caste aggression

Indian Catholics have kept caste and untouchability alive for 300 years. A ground report from Harobele, Karnataka, where Dalit Catholics are at the receiving of upper caste aggression.

Why do Dalits convert to Christianity? To break out of the Hindu caste system, you might say.

Not completely true, as we found out in Harobele, just 60 km from Bengaluru. Christianity entered the region centuries ago. The Catholic mission here, one of the oldest in Karnataka, was established in 1675; 980 of the 1,000 families here are Catholics.

Untouchablity 'everywhere'

In recent years a fixed number of jobs and seats have been earmarked in Catholic-run schools and colleges for members of the Dalit-Christian community. But this is being challenged in the court on the grounds that "there is no caste in Christianity".

Fr Yesumariyan continues: "The Indian constitution says it has abolished untouchablity. But it is everywhere. In the same way, the Catholic Church says there is no caste bias but caste discrimination is rampant in the Church.

"There are hardly any inter-caste marriages among converted Christians. Until recently, Church-run magazines carried matrimonial advertisements containing specific caste references. Only after our protest they stopped it."
A few churches in Tamil Nadu have even been closed after Dalit Christians demanded a share in the administration.  "We say there is no caste in Christianity," says Fr Chinnadurai. "But in India, Christianity was not able to get rid of caste. "Those who converted to Christianity brought their caste prejudices with them. We are trying our best to get rid of them."

3. Dalit Christians allege neglect, demand equal rights in churches

Representatives of various Dalit Christian organisations levelled series charges against church authorities. They said that 70 per cent of Christians in the district were Dalit Christians. But the churches were dominated by a section of Christians, whose population was just two per cent.

5.  Dalit Christians in India file complaint with UN against the Vatican
Christian Dalits in India filed a complaint on Tuesday with the United Nations accusing the Holy See of not doing enough to curb discrimination faced by “untouchables” within the Catholic Church.
The complaint accuses the Vatican and the Indian Catholic Church leadership of caste-based discrimination “by way of allowing it directly and indirectly in their spiritual, educational and administrative places”.

The delegation asked the UN and other organizations to urge the Holy See to eradicate the caste discriminatory practices and to withdraw the Permanent Observer position of the Holy See in the UN if the Vatican does not take the necessary steps.

6. ‘Even in death we are apart, away and outcaste’: A Dalit Christian from Kerala narrates the untold story of discrimination June 1, 2018 12:48:33 pm ****************************************************
Just fact check how the Church shamed Dalits for their open support to the Dalit hartal that happened. They forgot that we were the same as how we were when we left the Hindu fold. We were always silenced from speaking up, all our rebellions inside the religion crushed

All Dalit Christians who came into the fold in the whole of the 20th century were fooled by this fake promise of a spiritual Achha Din.

The liberal ones who always spoke about caste in Hinduism were also rendered silent. Even Dalit organisations seldom addressed our needs as such.

Kerala government has included the Dalit Christians under Other Eligible Communities (OEC) category which excludes us from the direct benefits of the SC/ST reservation, rendering the whole community into social and economic backwardness.
Dalits who constitute the majority of about 70 per cent of the Indian Christian population is given only less than 7% in the seats of power at the Church. My mother always wanted to be a nun, but when someone who became one told her about the bad treatment and discrimination one would face, she backed off. But even now she says that she should have been a nun and she adds: “It will always be dreadful thing… aren’t our people already in a dreadful state anyway.”

7. Is the caste system deep-rooted among Christians in India? A Kerala bishop stirs up a hornet’s nest
A senior priest from Kerala’s Jacobite Syrian Christian Church recently put the spotlight on the fact that some Christians in the state practice the caste system, when he announced that he would henceforth stay away from traditional family gatherings organised by members of the Church.
Dalit Christians in Tamil Nadu
It is not just Kerala. The plight of Dalit Christians in neighbouring Tamil Nadu is similar, if not worse. Christians form 6.1% of TN's Population. In Absolute Numbers 44 Lakh. Dalits constitute 70% of the Christians in the State

Earlier this month, the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front published a damning report that exposed discrimination by Christians against their Dalit bretheren in the state.

The report said that the practice of caste is prevalent in the formation of parishes (an administrative district headed by a parish priest) and seen in the construction of separate chapels in the same village for Dalits and other caste Christians. Discrimination is also evident in the denial of opportunities for Dalit Christians in the parish administration, as well as in jobs and the priesthood.

Antonysami Marx, a Dalit activist and writer, said the Church could not find a solution to the caste issue. “Dalit Christians have been facing discrimination at the hands of rich Christians from mainly Vanniayar and Nadar communities [in Tamil Nadu],” he said.

👉👉Marx said Dalit Christian students were also denied admissions in schools and colleges run by the Church. “Untouchability and social boycott are prevalent here,” he said. “The church has even allotted separate graveyards for Dalits.”

KOCHI: Cardinal George Alencherry, who is at the centre of the controversial land deals of the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese, has said the legal system of the country should not interfere in the Canon laws. Speaking after the Good Friday Mass at the Kokkamangalam St. Thomas Church in Alappuzha, Cardinal Alenchery, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, said it was the “duty of the citizen to obey the rule of law existing in the country, but more importance should be given to the divine law”. https://www.deccanchronicle.com/nation/current-affairs/310318/law-of-church-above-law-of-land-cardinal-george-alencherry.html
